THE ANATOMY OF A BOOK

A compilation of pages celebrating the 100-year history of the Avondhu GAA, including team photos, historical articles, and tribute messages, with a dominant color scheme of gold, black, and white.
A display board with a blue soccer jersey and various photographs and texts about the history of Aghinagh GAA Club, including a letter, team photo, and a history booklet.

key design elements

The content of the book should keep the reader engaged. A balanced mixture of text, photos, ephemera (such as programmes and newspaper articles) and quotes add a diverse reading experience.

A picture is worth a thousand words

Vintage photos give a sense of history and recent ones bring rich, vibrant colour to your book. Full bleed photos emphasise important events, while gallery pages tells a story in photos!

Things to consider:

  • Clarity of the photos - unless the photos are very old, photos should be clear and easy to see

  • Type of files - JPEG files are ideal. PDFs and PNG files can be used if that is the only option

  • Resolution - Photos to be scanned need to be set at 300dpi

GO WITH THE FLOW

Consider the balance of text and photos in your book. Giving the reader’s eyes a break is important. Elements such as quotes, stats and a chronology add depth and interest to your book with small bits of information to break up the text.

‘building a book to be proud of’

Combining the traditional and the modern, a good balance of text and photos AND the use of your team colours should be at the heart of your book design. This will assure your book will be thoroughly enjoyed until the last page is read!
